Should Christians meditate? Has Eastern religion an edge on Christianity? Are there natural laws in the universe which we can tap and use, achieving peace and tranquility? Such questions are being asked today, because of the increase of tension, unrest, and unease in the face of the world's problems. People are worried about nuclear armaments, the conflicts between nations, and many are unable to cope with rapid advances in technology. In all this, they ask, 'How can we achieve peace of mind, especially without resorting to drugs?' So many groups are giving their answer to this question. Transcendental Meditation has made rapid advances in many Western countries, and countless gurus from the Indian Subcontinent are selling their mystical wares for good prices. Does Christianity have a useful form of meditation, as good or better than the new imported ones, or is it secondary to more effective Eastern meditation? The answer is that whatever value or virtue may exist in Eastern methods, the Christian way of meditation has its roots reaching back through milleniums. It meditates upon God Himself, through the grace of God's action in covenant and Christ. Here, only, is true meditation founded upon the truth of God's creation and His marvellous redemption. That is why this book is eminently worth reading and studying. |
