George Müller was born at Kroppenstaedt in Prussia in September 1805. His father—an excise collector—was over-generous in his gifts of money to George and his brothers, mistakenly believing it would teach them how to manage their financial affairs when they grew up. His generosity only encouraged them to spend recklessly and then to lie about their so-called savings. George figured that it was no fault to steal, but only to have his theft found out! "Before I was ten years old, I had repeatedly stolen government money which was entrusted to my father and forced him to make up the losses".
