Commentaries on the
Epistle to the Ephesians:
|
|
Here there is vast
range.
The simplest would
be:
Ephesians (G.
Bingham, NCPI, n.d.).
One
Lord, One faith, One Baptism ( G.Bingham, NCPI).
The Tyndale Commentary Ephesians (F.
Foulkes, IVP, Leicester, 1976). The devotional commentary Ephesian
Studies by Bishop Handley Moule is a gem (Pickering and
Inglis, London, n.d.). The reprint of J. Armitage Robinson's Commentary
on Ephesians (Kregel, Grand Rapids, 1st Edition, 1903,
reprint 1979) is one of the finest. Modern writers are F. F.
Bruce The Epistle to the Ephesians (Pickering and
Inglis, 1961); Marcus Barth, Ephesians (The Anchor
Bible, Doubleday, New York: 2 vols.); C. Leslie Mitton, Ephesians (New
Century Bible, Oliphants, London, 1976); George Johnston, Ephesians,
Philippians, Colossians and Philemon (New Century Bible,
Oliphants, 1967); and T. K. Abbott, Ephesians and Colossians (ICC
Series, T. & T. Clark, Edinburgh, 1977). |
|
Note: There
are certain Commentary Series, such as The Expositor's Bible
Commentary (ed. Frank Gaebelein, Zondervan, Grand Rapids,
1978, 12 vols) and the Ephesian volume (vol. 11) is by A. Skevinton
Wood, an excellent commentary. You can ask your tutor for further
advice, if needed. |

Helpful books to
have on your shelves are: |
- The Lion Handbook
to the Bible, ed. (David & Pat
Alexander, Ansea Publishers).
- The New Bible
Dictionary, org. ed.
J. D. Douglas (IVP).
- The New Bible
Commentary Revised, ed.
D. Guthrie and others (IVP).
- A Concordance of
the Bible is essential. The three best available are Young's,
Strong's and Cruden's. Whilst these are linked with the Authorised
Version of the Bible, they can easily be used. Some modern
translations have issued their own concordances.
- The Revised Standard
Version (RSV) is used for these lessons. The New
International Version (NIV), the New American
Standard Bible (NASB) and the Authorised Version (AV)
may be used. Some versions are really paraphrases and cannot
be used for study.
