1. Know what
you want to say.
2. Plan how to say it...before
you start.
3. Be organized within each
paragraph in the essay:
(a) only have one main idea per
paragraph;
(b) begin each paragraph with
a key sentence, which
(i) links the essay to the topic and/or to
the paragraph which comes just before;
(ii) acts as a signpost for the subject matter
of the paragraph;
(c) round off each paragraph
with a concluding sentence.
4. Be logical in arranging
the order of the paragraphs:
(a) have an introductory paragraph,
which
(i) links the essay to the
topic;
(ii) acts as a signpost for
the subject matter of the essay;
(b) have paragraphs with similar
subject matter close to each other;
(c) round off the essay with
a suitable concluding paragraph.
5. Be precise: use words
and sentence structures to say exactly what you want to say.
6. Be concise: don't use
more words than necessary to say what you want to say.
7. Be simple: avoid complicated
words and sentence structure wherever you can.
8. Be direct: come straight
to the point; don't beat around the bush.
9. Clearly substantiate major assertions.
