Old Testament – The Book of Job – Martin Bleby
Write an essay on one of the following topics:
1. Choose one of the following: Eliphaz, Bildad, Zophar or Elihu. Answer these questions:
What characterises this person’s approach?
What truth of God has this person grasped?
What are the inadequacies of his position?
How is he (to be) answered?
What can we learn for ourselves from this person?
2. What is Job’s faith? Examine passages where expression is given to this (e.g. 1:20–22, 2:9–10, chapter 31, 13:13–28, chapters 14, 16, 23, 19:23–29). How does this relate to the New Testament teaching on justification?
3. ‘God’s two lengthy recitals are not replies to the questions that have tormented Job, and which his friends have failed to answer.’ Examine Job 38:1–42:6. How does God answer Job? How does Job respond? How satisfactory a conclusion is this to what has gone before?
